Executive Director – Alabama Education Retirees Association
Management and Administration
- Conduct the programs of the Association in accordance with the policies and purposes established by the Board of Directors
- Communicate effectively and frequently with the Board of Directors keeping them fully abreast of the regular and special business of the Association in a timely fashion
- Make recommendations with respect to programs and policy changes in accordance with the Association’s goals, philosophy and priorities
- Maintain a comprehensive filing system as well as the books and records of the Association
- Conduct research and evaluate information relative to the Association’s needs
- In cooperation with the President, prepare the Board agendas – and all accompanying documents – and mail to members prior to meetings
- Be responsible for hiring and supervising all staff and maintaining an efficient office
- Keep the AERA office open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for legal holidays or board-approved closings
- Perform tasks and directives, and fulfill such responsibilities as the Board of Directors may direct
Financial
- Maintain an accurate accounting of all money received by the state office
- Maintain accurate records of all receipts and disbursements of the Association
- Review monthly financial reports and present detailed accounting at each regular Board meeting
- See that all excess receipts are invested promptly for maximum financial returns
- Review the annual budget and present it to the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors
- Review the financial records used for the annual audit
Public Relations
- Project an image of dignity and professionalism that brings credit to the Association
- Be familiar with and maintain positive relationships with all necessary and appropriate entities, organizations, individuals, and networks (i.e., Governor, administration officials, State Legislature, the Alabama Education Association, the Retirement Systems of Alabama, public school officials and teachers, and similar entities)
- Review the finished “The AERA Voice!” prior to printing and oversee the mailing to all members, public school superintendents, other states with organizations for retired education personnel, and other appropriate organizations and individuals
- Promote AERA through various communication channels, which may include written materials and social media platforms
State/Standing Committees
- Solicit nominations from local units for the various state committee vacancies.
- Advise the President-elect regarding appointments to state committees
- Conduct an orientation of the state committees
- Serve as an ex-officio member of all state committees, providing technical assistance and performing research.
Membership
- Maintain and keep accurate membership records of the Association in a safe environment
- devise and implement procedures for retaining members and the collection of dues, in conjunction with AEA
- develop, recommend, and implement creative approaches for membership recruitment
- Assist local units in the development and implementation of all local membership efforts
- Keep the Board informed about state and local membership
Legislative
- Prepare the annual legislative direction with the collaboration of the Board of Directors
- Prepare appropriate bills for introduction into the State Legislature as directed by the Board and secure legislative sponsors
- Provide personal lobbying in support of AERA bills
- be fully aware and familiar with pending legislation affecting AERA or its interests
- Organize an advocacy network among the local units and conduct area advocacy training meetings before the legislative session begins
- Organize advocacy events as needed to promote recognition of education retirees at the state legislature
AERA Meetings
- In cooperation with the President, plan and conduct the Annual Meeting at which the retired delegates consider Association business
- In cooperation with the District Directors and Membership Coordinators, plan and conduct the Annual District Meetings
- Plan and conduct such other meetings as the Board may approve, such as Board meetings, committee orientations and meetings, and the Leadership Workshop
- Plan and conduct various state meetings, which will involve overnight state travel
Local Units
- Communicate in writing with all local units on a regular basis regarding the programs and activities they are to implement
- Visit local units as frequently as possible to inform and encourage them regarding the Association’s programs and activities
Miscellaneous
- Attend various national conferences, meetings, and training courses on behalf of the Association.
- Additional responsibilities and duties may be assigned as applicable to the role of Executive Director
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
Salary
- Salary as per the established negotiated agreement
